Brett Heilman

Yoga Instructor

“I really saw the difference meditation and Yoga made while working as a special education teacher at a school dedicated to students with autism. The students would arrive and quietly play until the point my classroom assistant would run a meditation that she called “grounding,” and after we would get to work for the day. However, I noticed on days this grounding did not take place, the demeanor of the students would change and I often spent the afternoon cleaning a destroyed classroom.

At a similar time, I began my initial Yoga classes due to the studio's proximity to my favorite burrito restaurant. Seeing the benefits of meditation firsthand in the classroom, and then applied through asana practice revolutionized physical activity and fitness for me. Excellent early teachers persuaded me to look into the Eight-Limbed Path of Yoga and from that point I was hooked. Yoga is an endlessly-deep, robust, and well-crafted system to calm the fluctuations of the mind, and that is why I teach it. In the classroom, with my assistant's meditations, this system of Yoga is what I saw unfolding.”
